As a young woman in college, I had a love for family history, historic preservation, and community service. All of these interests led me to want to join the DAR. I knew I had an American Revolutionary War ancestor and a few great aunts who had been members. I encouraged my mother to join so that I could then join later and it would be easier. I wish I had joined at eighteen.
Not only did my mother join but my sister did as well. As members we have participated in many community service projects including a traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial, providing scholarships to local students, marking historic locations, and providing service dogs to returning Vets. Networking opportunities with other members helped my sister find a job. As a young member, I had the privilege of serving as a Page at state and national conventions. This wonderful experience allowed me to gain friendships that span the world and the best memories.
The best things about being a DAR member are the many DAR friends we have and the wide variety of committees that allow every DAR member to find her niche.
